THAT’S AMORE & IT’S IN HIS KISS

Have you ever known a song which lifts your heart up to the clouds and fills you with happiness whenever you hear it? I have; the song is called That’s Amore (Amore, of course, means love in Italian). That’s Amore is a song written by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Jack Brooks in 1952 and became a hit for Dean Martin in 1958.

I came across the song when I was watching a 1978 movie called Moonlight, starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. There was no Youtube at that time so it was left to luck alone that I could hear it now and then on the radio. It was only towards the end of working life at the office when I had quite a lot of spare time and Youtube was a tool which could take you to music heaven with its song clips and music videos that I experimentally typed in the words “That’s Amore - Dean Martin” and waited with trepidation to see whether the lovely song would still fill my heart with happiness and love for all beings.

Well, as soon as the first notes of music filled my ears, I knew my waiting years had not proved me wrong. The song was as beautifully tuned, worded and sung as ever. I remember saving it in my PC and listening to it continuously for days until my boss walked out of his room to tell me to get back to work! Anyway, I was too happy to mind him. Now I would like to share this beautiful and heaven-sent song with you, and if you sing along with it, you may discover that you love it as much as I do.

That’s Amore
By Jack Brooks, Harry Warren
Artist: Dean Martin

(In Napoli where love is king
When boy meets girl here's what they say)

When the moon hits you eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
That's amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool
That's amore
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You're in love
When you walk down in a dream but you know you're not
Dreaming signore
Scuzza me, but you see, back in old Napoli
That's amore

(When the moon hits you eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
That's amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella
Lucky fella

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool)
That's amore
(When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You're in love
When you walk down in a dream but you know you're not
Dreaming signore
Scuzza me, but you see, back in old Napoli)
That's amore

Incidentally, the beautiful actress Cher, herself, has been a singer since the 60’s when she was half the husband-and-wife singing team, Sonny and Cher. One popular song performed by her is The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss), which was written by Rudy Clark in 1964 and was recorded by dozens of artists and groups around the world in the decades since. It became an international hit when remade by Cher in 1990. I like it and hope you also will.

The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)
Songwriter: Rudy Clark
Artist: Cher

Does he love me I want to know
How can I tell if he loves me so

Is it in his eyes?
Oh no! You'll be deceived
Is it in his sighs?
Oh no! He'll make believe
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

Is it in his face?
Oh no! That's just his charms
In his warm embrace?
Oh no! That's just his arms
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

Kiss him and squeeze him tight
Find out what you want to know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss

How about the way he acts
Oh no! That's not the way
And you're not list'nin' to all I say
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

Hug him and squeeze him tight
Find out what you want to know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss

How about the way he acts
Oh no! That's not the way
And you're not listnin' to all I say
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

It's in his kiss
That's where it is
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

It's in his kiss
That's where it is
It's in his kiss
That's where it is

MY BOOMERANG WON’T COME BACK

You know, I sometimes feel like a frustrated “paper” DJ who has plenty of long play records to put on the turntable but no time to do it.

Tonight, having a one-hour free time before my midnight bedtime, I thought now is a good opportunity as any to put one of my favorite all time songs on the “paper” turntable. As Australia was the land I grew up in as a teenager, all the songs during my stay there were like gifts from heaven to somebody who wanted to learn English by listening to songs. Now, after deciding on writing another music blog tonight, the song which burst out from deep inside me was this one….”My Boomerang Won’t Come Back” by Charlie Drake. I think what makes me love this song, besides its catchy tune, was the lyrics. I adore songs which can make us laugh because of what they say. Here, the boy who is crying that his boomerang won’t come back although he waves it all over the place is told by one of the elders of his tribe that he has to throw it before it comes back. Isn’t that priceless? Let’s hear this hilarious song together then, “My Boomerang Won’t Come Back” by Charlie Drake, an English comedian, actor, writer and singer who makes us believe that he was really the Aboriginal boy in the song who madly waves his boomerang and forgets to let go until the local witch doctor takes pity on him and informs him that if he wants his boomerang to come back he first has to throw it!

Producer: George Martin

Singer: Charlie Drake

(Oom-yacka-wurka, oom-yacka-wurka, oom-yacka-wurka)
In the bad backlands of Australia
Many years ago,
The aborigine tribes were meeting,
Having a big pow-wow.

(Oom-yacka-wurka, oom-yacka-wurka)

"We got a lot of trouble, Chief,
On account of your son Mack."

"My boy Mack? Why, what's wrong with him?"
DRAKE: My boomerang won't come back.
"Your boomerang won't come back?"

DRAKE: My boomerang won't come back,
My boomerang won't come back,
I've waved the thing all over the place,
Practised till I was black in the face,
I'm a big disgrace to the Aborigine race,
My boomerang won't come back.

DRAKE: I can ride a kangaroo (yeah yeah)
Make kinkajou stew (yeah yeah)
But I'm a big disgrace to the Aborigine race,
My boomerang won't come back.

They banished him from the tribe then
And sent him on his way,
He had a backless boomerang
So here he could not stay.

DRAKE: [Spoken] This is nice, innit? Getting banished at my time of life. What a way to spend an evening: sitting on a rock in the middle of the desert with me boomerang in me hand. I shall very likely get bushwhacked.

(An animal roars; Drake shrieks back.)

DRAKE: Get out of it! You nasty bushwhacking animal.
Think I'll make a nice cup of tea.
(Doing, doing, doing...)
Good gracious! There goes a kangaroo. I must have a practice with me boomerang: hit him right
behind the left earhole. Now then, slowly back.

Gruff voice: If you throw that thing at me, I'll jump right on your head. (It chuckles and bounces away.)

DRAKE: Innit marvellous? Got a land full of kangaroos and I had to pick that one.

For three long months he sat there
Or maybe it was four,
Then an old old man in a kangaroo skin
Came a-knocking at his door.

"Well, I'm the local witch doctor, son,
They call me George Alfred Black.
Now tell me, what's your trouble, boy?"

"Don't worry, boy, I know the trick,
And to you I'm gonna show it.
If you want your boomerang to come back,
Well first you've got to... throw it."

DRAKE: Ooh, yes! Never thought of that. Daddy will be pleased. Must have a go, nyuh-huh! Excuse me.
Now then, slowly back... and throw.

(Boomerang whizzes away; Sounds of a plane approaching and then falling from the sky.)

DRAKE: Ooh my God! I've hit the flying doctor. Eee-hee-hee! Can you do first aid?

Witch Doctor: Don't talk to me about first aid, boy, you owe me fourteen chickens, you know, when I learned you to throw the boomerang, you know, first things first.

DRAKE: Yes, I know that, but I mean, I think on this occasion, you know, you could be a bit more perspective...........

A song of love is a sad song

“A song of love is a sad song, Hi Lili Hi Lili Hi Lo
A song of love is a song of woe, don’t ask me how I know
A song of love is a sad song, for I have loved and have lost
I sit at my window and watch the birds (??), Hi Lili Hi Lili Hi Lo”

Whenever I had sat quietly alone in front of my computer, this verse in the song Hi Lili Hi Lo would materialized in my head and I would start singing them without knowing whether the words were correct or not but as I was not singing in front of anyone who would know the words, I just let my happiness flow without checking.

Then today, I felt that I must hear the correct version of Hi Lili Hi Lo and see who the singer is who has captured my heart with her beautiful, deep voice. I quickly used the Google search engine which turned up a handful of Youtube versions of this song with various singers and I started from the top with Leslie Caron singing it in the film. No, it was definitely not Leslie with her little girl voice in the film. My eyes landed next on Anne Murray and I was suddenly 100% sure it was Anne’s voice that I’d been emulating all these years whenever I sang this song. I clicked on Anne Murry’s version, and found that I was right. Let’s hear this beautiful song together, shall we?

Hi Lili Hi Lo

Songwriters: Deutsch, Helen / Kaper, Bronislaw
Artiste: Anne Murray

On every tree there sits a bird
Singing a song of love
On every tree there sits a bird
And every bird I’ve ever heard
Could break my heart without a word
Singing a song of love

*A song of love is a sad song,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
A song of love is a song of woe
Don’t ask me how I know
A song of love is a sad song
For I have loved and it’s so
I sit at the window and watch the rain,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
Tomorrow I’ll probably love again,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.

(*Repeat)

Actually, Anne Murray, the multiple award-winning Canadian singer in Pop, Country and Adult Contemporary Music, has been one of my favorite singers ever since I saw her on television singing the song “You Needed Me” to Burt Reynolds during some Benefits he hosted many years ago. Murray’s albums have sold over 54 million copies worldwide. She has received numerous awards and been indicted into various Halls of Fame. In 2011, Billboard ranked her 10th on their list of the 50 Biggest AC (Adult contemporary music) Artists Ever.

“You Needed Me” is another song sung unreservedly by Anne Murray and I should like to share it with you. This song was written by Randy Goodrum, who describes it as being about unconditional undeserved love.

YOU NEEDED ME
Writer : Randy Goodrum
Artiste: Anne Murray

I cried a tear, you wiped it dry
I was confused, you cleared my mind
I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

And I can't believe it's you
I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave?
I'd be a fool 'cause I finally found someone who really cares

You held my hand when it was cold
When I was lost you took me home
You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again
You even called me "friend"

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

You needed me, you needed me

AS YOU LIKE IT

Have you ever felt buoyant thinking about a song which has a kooky and kinky sound? This recently happened to me while I was reflecting on songs of yesteryears that I loved, because one tune suddenly jumped out and played round and round in my head and I couldn’t concentrate on anything else until I got to know who the singer with the funny voice was who made me drop everything else just to find out about him and his song.

Actually, the bit from the song which went round and round in my head was

“As you like it,
As you like it,
As you like it”

which came right at the end. Another part was “If you’re looking for a saint dear, that, I warn you that you won’t get far.” So, what did I do to dig out this song? I relied on Old Google who knows everything. I went into Google’s search box and confidently typed “As You Like It” and, of course, as should have been expected, Shakespeare came up unerringly. A fool that I was, I even scanned through the Wikipedia containing Shakespeare’s As You Like It in case this song was incorporated into some play or short movie of it. Needless to say, Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and my “As you Like It” are not even distantly related.

I then did the next best thing. I typed the words “If you’re looking for a saint dear, that, I warn you, that you won’t get far” into Google’s box and hit the jackpot as the whole verse and chorus jumped out at me.

But before we enjoy ourselves with this “kinky” song, let’s discover who Adam Faith is and why this song of his couldn’t wait its turn but pushed its way to the top of my want-to-hear “yestersong” list.

Terence "Terry" Nelhams-Wright, known as Adam Faith, was a British teen idol, singer, actor, and financial journalist. He was born on June 23, 1940, in London, United Kingdom and died at the age of 62. Much of his early success was through partnership with songwriter Les Vandyke.

So, now we are ready to hear this heady song

AS YOU LIKE IT
Composed by Les Vandyke
Sung by Adam Faith

If you don’t like the kooky way I comb my hair for you
And you don’t like the look of the crazy pants
I wear for you
OK my darling, I’ll change each pitch
I only wanna love you
As you like it

If you don’t like the gang that I go around with
On the town
And you don’t like the records I play
Because they bring you down
OK my darling, I’ll have to quit
I only wanna love you
As you like it

If you’re looking for a saint, dear
Better warn you that you won’t get far
I’m a man that’s only human
I’m gonna change my ways for you
And love you as you are

‘Cause you don’t realize
That I’m gonna make a fight for you
Just a look from your eyes
And I’d set the world alight for you
OK my darling, and now the fuse is lit
You know I’m gonna love you
As you like it

If you’re looking for a saint, dear
Better warn you that you won’t get far
I’m a man that’s only human
I’m gonna change my ways for you
And love you as you are

But you don’t realize that I’m gonna make a fight for you
Just a look from your eyes
And I’d set the world alight for you
OK my darling, when the fuse is lit
You know I’m gonna love you

As you like it
As you like it
As you like it

Now, while I was looking up the lyrics of As You Like It, I came across the name of another song by Adam Faith which I liked very much. Unfortunately, although I searched and searched, I couldn’t find the lyrics, and, again I did the next best thing and just listened to the song and deciphered the lyrics by myself so there may be some mistakes. Of course, I would be very happy if you could decipher it better and let me know which words I got wrong. Anyway, I invite you now to listen to the song and see if you’ll agree with me that the funny music and words do grow on you after a while.

FACE TO FACE
Composed by Les Vandyke
Sung by Adam Faith

All night I’ve waited by the telephone
I keep a’ringing and the plumber says you’re not at home
I’ll bet you’re sitting by that old TV
This idiot lad has got his place
But just you wait till you’re face to face with me

Um, face to face
I’m going to ask you some awkward questions
Face to face
You’re going to act on my directions
You’ll wait up to get off the hook
But baby you’re gonna get took
When you come face to face with me
Yeah

All day I work away and think of you
I keep a’ wondering if there is something else to do
Your life is governed by that old TV
The problem in the bug has got its place
But just you wait till you face to face with me

Um, face to face
I’m going to ask you some awkward questions
Face to face
You’re going to act on my directions
You’ll wait up to get off the hook
But baby you’re gonna get took
When you come face to face with me

One more time.
Well, face to face
I’m going to ask you some awkward questions
Face to face
You’re going to act on my directions
You’ll wait up to get off the hook
But baby you’re gonna get took
When you come face to face with me
Um, face to face
I say, face to face

We are the world …We are the children

Yesterday being Children’s Day in Thailand, I was constantly hearing on television our lively Thailand’s Children’s Day song, which triggered off my memories of a world-famous song in which many celebrated American singers participated to raise money for Africa.

This world-famous song, of course, is not the traditional children’s day song but the concept of the song is that we are all children of the world and much can be achieved if we help each other. Yes, I am undoubtedly talking about the song “We are the World”. The idea of this impact-full song was originally conceived when American singer, songwriter, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte wanted to put together a benefit concert that featured black musicians to raise money for African famine relief in Ethiopia which was experiencing unusual drought that year.

Belafonte asked Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to write the song, and the single was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian in 1985 for the album We Are the World. Forty-five great artistes of that era which included Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Tina Turner, Ray Charles and Roy Orbison got together to record the single that became a worldwide commercial success and sold more than 20 million copies after it was released on March 7, 1985.

"We are the world, we are the children,
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving.”

I think everyone who was grown up enough to like music in that era could sing this beautiful song which I would like to share now with all of you.

"We're The World (USA For Africa)"

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We all are a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know,
Love is all we need

[Chorus:]
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

[Chorus]

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well...well...well
Let's realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
[Chorus]

Thailand’s Children’s Day Song

As I mentioned above, yesterday was Children’s Day in Thailand and from early morning onwards as well as throughout the day I heard on television Thailand’s Children’s Day song which almost every Thai child from the age of six onwards should be able to sing.

Is there something special about this song? Well, it’s one of those learning-by-repeating songs which are so popular in Thai classrooms. You will see what I mean in the translation I did below, and in order to make it more fun, I have also done a ka-ra-o-ke version for you to sing along if you wish.

(Literal Translation of Thailand’s Children’s Day Song)
Respectful children
Have 10 duties to carry out
Obedient children
Have 10 duties to carry out

One: They follow the teaching of their religions
Two: They stick very close to traditions
Three: They obey parents and teachers

Four: They speak with politeness and sweet words
Five: They cherish reciprocation and loyalty
Six: They know and love their duty

Seven: They study to become proficient
They are diligent, they persevere, and are never lazy
Eight: They know how to save for the future

Nine: They are ever so honest
With the courage and braveness of sportsmen
To make themselves fit for this nation development era

Ten: They make themselves indispensable
They know what’s right what’s wrong; they preserve the country’s treasures
Children in this nation development era
Will be children to lead our nation to prosperity

So, did you like the meaning of our Children’s Day song, and are you ready to sing along with these lively schoolchildren?
Let’s go then.

TELL ME WHO vs. Que sera sera

TELL ME WHO…

Have you ever had a favorite song which you started singing when you were little and could remember all the lyrics and melody throughout these years? I have; it’s a Thai song called “TELL ME WHO”, or “KRAI NAW” and it was written by one of our favorite Thai musicians, Mr. Surapon Tonovanik in 1955.
I should like to give you the meaning of the song first and maybe you’d like to sing along with the karaoke words below.

The song begins by asking:

“Tell me who… love us as much as life (as much as life)
Tell me who…are always and forever kind (forever kind)
Tell me who…love us and not only our body
Their love is untiring
Never wanting to hurt us….Tell me who

Tell me who….hug us always to their chest
Tell me who… always spoil and console us best
Tell me who…love us more than their eyes
Their love is greater than
The earth…plus the sky

If you use the world…as a pen
The sky…as a sheet of paper
And all the water in the oceans…as ink
That’s not even close to telling about their kindness

Tell me who….love us as much as life (as much as life)
Tell me who… let us ride on their shoulder(Daddy-Mummy)
Tell me who…lure us to sleep at night
If you know who…don’t even wait
Just repay their kindness

If you use the world…as a pen
The sky…as a sheet of paper
And all the water in the oceans…as ink
That’s not even close to telling about their kindness

Tell me who….love us as much as life (as much as life)
Tell me who… let us ride on their shoulder(Daddy-Mummy)
Tell me who…lure us to sleep at night
If you know who…don’t even wait
Just repay their kindness”

And now that you know the meaning of the song, maybe you’d like to sing along with the song itself. I’ve made a karaoke out of it, but of course my above English translation can, with some maneuvering, be sung to the tune also.

Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)

Now that we’ve enjoyed the Thai children-talk-about-parents song, I feel this blog would be incomplete if I did not supplement it with an American lady-talks-about-her-sweetheart-and-children song. Can you guess what the song is? A hint – it’s everybody’s favorite song, originally sung by Doris Day, who, as one of her ardent admirers wrote, was one of the most talented, most beloved, most popular, and most successful stars in her day.

But before hearing this well-known song which has been translated into 8 foreign languages (Polish, Tamil, Yiddish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Japanese and French), let us find out a little bit more about it.

Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) is a popular song written by the Jay Livingston and Ray Evans songwriting team. It was first published in the Alfred Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) starring Doris Day and James Stewart.

And now that we are acquainted with the song’s background, let enjoy and sing along with it.

Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)
Music by Jay Livingston and Lyrics by Ray Evans

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

When I was young, I fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows, day after day
Here's what my sweetheart said.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich
I tell them tenderly.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.
