A song of love is a sad song

“A song of love is a sad song, Hi Lili Hi Lili Hi Lo
A song of love is a song of woe, don’t ask me how I know
A song of love is a sad song, for I have loved and have lost
I sit at my window and watch the birds (??), Hi Lili Hi Lili Hi Lo”

Whenever I had sat quietly alone in front of my computer, this verse in the song Hi Lili Hi Lo would materialized in my head and I would start singing them without knowing whether the words were correct or not but as I was not singing in front of anyone who would know the words, I just let my happiness flow without checking.

Then today, I felt that I must hear the correct version of Hi Lili Hi Lo and see who the singer is who has captured my heart with her beautiful, deep voice. I quickly used the Google search engine which turned up a handful of Youtube versions of this song with various singers and I started from the top with Leslie Caron singing it in the film. No, it was definitely not Leslie with her little girl voice in the film. My eyes landed next on Anne Murray and I was suddenly 100% sure it was Anne’s voice that I’d been emulating all these years whenever I sang this song. I clicked on Anne Murry’s version, and found that I was right. Let’s hear this beautiful song together, shall we?

Hi Lili Hi Lo

Songwriters: Deutsch, Helen / Kaper, Bronislaw
Artiste: Anne Murray

On every tree there sits a bird
Singing a song of love
On every tree there sits a bird
And every bird I’ve ever heard
Could break my heart without a word
Singing a song of love

*A song of love is a sad song,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
A song of love is a song of woe
Don’t ask me how I know
A song of love is a sad song
For I have loved and it’s so
I sit at the window and watch the rain,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
Tomorrow I’ll probably love again,
Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.

(*Repeat)

Actually, Anne Murray, the multiple award-winning Canadian singer in Pop, Country and Adult Contemporary Music, has been one of my favorite singers ever since I saw her on television singing the song “You Needed Me” to Burt Reynolds during some Benefits he hosted many years ago. Murray’s albums have sold over 54 million copies worldwide. She has received numerous awards and been indicted into various Halls of Fame. In 2011, Billboard ranked her 10th on their list of the 50 Biggest AC (Adult contemporary music) Artists Ever.

“You Needed Me” is another song sung unreservedly by Anne Murray and I should like to share it with you. This song was written by Randy Goodrum, who describes it as being about unconditional undeserved love.

YOU NEEDED ME
Writer : Randy Goodrum
Artiste: Anne Murray

I cried a tear, you wiped it dry
I was confused, you cleared my mind
I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

And I can't believe it's you
I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave?
I'd be a fool 'cause I finally found someone who really cares

You held my hand when it was cold
When I was lost you took me home
You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again
You even called me "friend"

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

You needed me, you needed me
